Real Help With Your 501(c)(3) Application
A. Check your 501(c)(3) determination letter. [If you do not have a copy of the letter handy, go to https://apps.irs.gov/app/eos/ and enter your organization's EIN in the search box. When your organization's record comes up, click on "Determination Letters."] If your most recent 501(c)(3) determination letter says "Letter 1076" in the lower right hand corner, your group has been classified as private foundation. Note the last sentence of the second paragraph: "We determined you're a private foundation…"
If a "Letter 4425" with a more recent date than the 1076 letter also appears in your IRS record, congratulations, the "erroneous private foundation" problem has been fixed! A "Letter 947," in your IRS record indicates that if there was a mistake in your Form 1023-EZ (or 1023), it was fixed before the IRS issued their final letter.
